Clear Aligners

With clear aligners, patients can straighten their teeth and correct functional bite problems easily and discreetly. For people who don’t like the appearance of traditional braces, clear aligners are a fantastic way to achieve a beautiful, new smile. At Pure Orthodontics, we’ve made aligner treatment as easy as possible by partnering with Dental Monitoring so that your treatment can even be monitored from the comfort of your home!  This means less-in-office visits, less time off school or work, and greater convenience!

What Are Clear Aligners?

Clear aligners are removable, custom-made aligners that are nearly invisible, so your friends and family can barely tell you’re having your teeth straightened! Thanks to their superior aesthetics, many patients prefer aligners over braces. Click here to read our clear aligners information guide and here to read the instruction guide.

What Are the Other Advantages of Clear Aligners?

  • You can take your aligners out while you brush and floss, making it easy to maintain excellent oral hygiene.
  • They are removed for eating and drinking, so there are no dietary restrictions.
  • Custom-made clear aligners are close-fitting and comfortable.
  • There are fewer emergency visits compared with braces.
  • Clear aligners require fewer visits to your orthodontist for adjustments.
  • Your treatment can be monitored from the comfort of your home making treatment more convenient than ever before.

There are a variety of clear aligner brands available. At Pure Orthodontics, we use Spark clear aligners to treat our patients.

How Does the Treatment Work?

Using our iTero scanner, we construct a digital model of your teeth which is used to carefully plan your tooth movements and make your aligners.  When your aligners arrive at the practice, you’ll come in to get your treatment started.  Attachments, which are tooth coloured bumps necessary for reliable tooth movement, are placed on your teeth.   You’ll also be shown how to use the Dental Monitoring app which carefully tracks your tooth movements.

Your aligners must be worn for at least 20-22 hours per day to move your teeth effectively. They should only be removed for eating, drinking anything other than cool water, brushing and flossing.

You should wear each set of aligners for one to two weeks, depending on how quickly your teeth move. The data derived from the Dental Monitoring app will tell you when you are ready to move onto your next set of aligners. As you go through the series of aligners, your teeth will move into their desired positions little by little.

The number of aligners you need, and the treatment time will depend on the severity of your bite problem.  Very simple problems can be treated in a few months, while complicated problems can take two or more years.

Frequently Asked Questions

You may experience some discomfort for a few days after your clear aligners are fitted and whenever a new aligner is inserted. This will subside quickly, but over-the-counter pain relief and eating soft food will help you manage this discomfort.

The attachments on your teeth can sometimes rub the inside of your lips and cheeks, but any discomfort related to your attachments will quickly subside.

The treatment time necessary for clear aligners depends on the complexity of your case. Very simple cases can be managed in six months or less, but very complicated problems can take two years or more to correct. Patient cooperation is incredibly important to minimise your treatment time. Aligners must be worn for 20-22 hours per day for optimal, efficient tooth movement.

Braces have been around for a long time and are the treatment method to which all others are compared. For many orthodontic problems, braces and aligners will give the same outcome. However, there are some bite problems where aligner treatment is better and others where braces are the best way to achieve the desired outcome. Dr Shell will let you know which option is best for you.

Clear Aligners Technology

Dental Monitoring

We all lead busy lives. Finding time to visit the orthodontist between school, work, hobbies, chores and time with friends and family can be challenging. Fortunately, a busy schedule is no longer a an obstacle to having orthodontic treatment.

With Dental Monitoring, our Orthodontists and their team are able to monitor your clear aligner treatment from the comfort of your own home, or from anywhere else you happen to be.  Not only does this minimise the number of in-office visits required, but the incredible artificial intelligence technology incorporated into this system lets you know when you’re ready to move onto your next aligners.  All you need is a smartphone, the Dental Monitoring App and you can get started!

How Does Dental Monitoring Work?

Once you have begun your clear aligner treatment, you’ll be prompted to scan your teeth regularly using the camera on your smartphone which is mounted into the Dental Monitoring scan box we’ll give you. Scans are usually performed weekly, but the schedule will be adjusted depending on how quickly your teeth move. You’ll be guided through the process of taking scans of your teeth both with and without your clear aligners in your mouth. With the data gathered from the Dental Monitoring app, our Orthodontists can track the movement of your teeth, assess your aligner fit, your bite, oral hygiene and so much more.  Did you know that a massive 96 parameters are assessed using the Dental Monitoring system?  If your teeth aren’t moving as expected, our Orthodontists can provide you with feedback via the app to address any problems quickly and keep your treatment on track.

Benefits of Dental Monitoring

Convenience is the most obvious benefit of using the Dental Monitoring app. However, there are other benefits that patients who use Dental Monitoring enjoy, such as:

  1. Weekly monitoring enables us to keep a closer eye on your progress, compared with the traditional model of in-office reviews every 6- 8 weeks.  If any concerns arise, they can be dealt with promptly, thereby keeping your treatment on schedule.
  2. You only need to come into the office when necessary.
  3. You can message us directly through the Dental Monitoring app at any time, making communication between you and our Orthodontists easier than ever.
  4. Both parents and children can download the app, which enables mums and dads to see how their child’s treatment is progressing.
  5. During these uncertain times, where life is continually interrupted with lockdowns, treatment can continue undisturbed.
