Option 1: In Office Visit

When you arrive for your consultation, you will be greeted by our friendly reception team. You will be introduced to your dedicated treatment coordinator, who will be with you throughout your orthodontic journey.

Getting to Know You

During the first stage of your consultation, your treatment coordinator will spend some time getting to know you. A member of our friendly team will take a set of clinical photos, which comprise a series of facial images and some great close-ups of your teeth. While this is going on, your orthodontist is analysing and assessing your x-rays.

Your Orthodontic Examination

You will meet your orthodontist, who will conduct a thorough examination of your facial structure, bite, tooth position, the health of the soft tissues and jaw function. Once this is complete, your orthodontist will discuss your x-ray results and explain the possible treatment options. This is the perfect time for you to ask any questions you may have.

If your orthodontic problem is particularly complex, your orthodontist may need to collect additional information before deciding on the best treatment plan for you. In these situations, we will also take a digital scan of your teeth.  Once all the necessary information has been gathered and analysed, you will receive a treatment plan from your orthodontist.

If it is too early to start treatment, your child will be placed in our “Continuing Care Programme”. They will be reviewed periodically, at no extra cost, until they are ready for orthodontic treatment. These appointments allows our orthodontist to closely monitor your child's growth and development, giving her the opportunity to address their orthodontic needs at the optimum time.

The Treatment Plan

Once you understand the treatment required, your orthodontist will return you to the care of your treatment coordinator. The treatment coordinator will show you the appropriate orthodontic appliances you need, explain how they are fitted and the type of appointment schedule you will require to get your treatment going. The treatment coordinator will also discuss the risks and benefits specific to your orthodontic needs so that you can make a fully informed decision regarding treatment.

Sometimes other dental specialists, such as an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon or a Periodontist, need to be involved in your care. If so, your treatment coordinator can arrange an appointment for you to see them prior to starting any orthodontic treatment.

Your treatment coordinator will provide you with an itemised quotation for treatment and will explain our convenient, interest-free payment plans. If you have private health insurance, this quotation can be taken to your insurer so that you can determine the rebate you are eligible for.

Your Orthodontic Treatment Options Summarised

During the final stages of your consultation, your treatment coordinator will present you with a personalised treatment information folder that contains all of the information discussed during your appointment.

Within 24 hours, both you and your general dentist will be emailed a detailed written report. This will outline our findings as well as any possible treatment options. A copy of your clinical photographs will also be sent to your dentist.

If you’re ready to start treatment, your treatment coordinator will be able to organise your appointments for you.

Option 2: Online Tele-Health Program

New Patient Appointments Via Our Tele-Health Platform

We are excited to be able to offer our patients consultations via our tele-health platform.  Devised in response to ongoing lockdowns and our desire to make treatment as convenient as possible for you, this new service allows us to examine you quicker than our current long waiting lists allow.

How do tele-health orthodontic consultations work?

In order to be able to provide an initial orthodontic assessment, we use our tele-health platform “SmileMate”. This home-based program guides you through the process of taking images of you or your child’s face and teeth with your smartphone. Dr Shell will personally review these photos as well as the orthodontic x-rays we’ll refer you for.  With this information and your completed Patient Registration Form, she’s able to identify the problems and come up with one or more possible treatment options, which will be shared with you via our free “Orthodontic Health Report”.

Following this, one of our highly trained treatment coordinators will invite you to an online consultation to explain the treatment options that may be available to you in detail, including estimated treatment fees and our interest-free payment plans.

If you or your child is ready for treatment, an in-office consultation with Dr Shell is arranged. At this visit, she will conduct a thorough orthodontic examination and confirm (or, if necessary, adjust) the plan previously outlined to you.

Is a tele-health consultation as good as a traditional, onsite appointment?

The information we can gather from photographs and x-rays enables us to have a clear idea of your orthodontic problem and to give you a great deal of information about your treatment options without you having to find the time to come into our office. That means less time off school or work and increased convenience for you. While we are extremely confident with our assessments most of the time, particularly for straightforward orthodontic problems, we would never embark on a course of care without a full face-to-face orthodontic examination first.

If your case is particularly complex, we can tell from the information provided via the tele-health platform. In these circumstances, we revert to a traditional in-office appointment as outlined above.
